Lunch Line

I just came back from the screening of "Lunch Line". It was the documentary movie of Lunch at school in the U.S.A.
It was really interesting to see how they serve lunch in America.
I thought in Japan our school lunch was not perfect and sometimes I had to eat rice with milk or bread with Udon noodle and milk. So I was complaining about their combination all the time but when I saw this movie, I knew how Japanese school lunch is good for children....
Here in US, not all children eats school lunch but some of them bring lunch from home. So that is big difference from Japan. Some of private schools don't have school lunch but in public school we have school lunch and the menu is fixed and everybody eats same menu at class room. And most of teachers tried to make all students eat everything on the plate:)
And in Japan kitchen stuff make their lunch and put in big container for each classes and after that students serve their lunch by themselves. There are around 5 students charge for one week lunch to serve for class mates. So they don't need to hire extra people.
When I saw this movie, the most shocking word was "Before talking about local or organic food, we need to feed children FOOD!!" There are too many unhealthy commercial products. Comparing that I thought we eat FOOD at least in Japanese school...
Also after the movie, directors and some specialists of school lunch discussed about the movie and the problem of school lunch. And one of them said "Cooking is the one of the way of surviving and now we are losing this skill." (if my hearing is right) and it happened in kitchen in the school too. This word shocked me too... but I thought this is really true.
There are many problems because of political issues, economy and many things. I understand that. And I think there are many problems in Japan too. But we do very different things. So I thought if we could share our problem and learn from each other, that would be wonderful.
Now many people are concerning about school lunch in USA. Also in Japan our eating habit is changing and because of this many children became easy to snap or can't be calm are problems....
So I hope everyone can see this movie or hear about this movie and think about food and our future of children.

But on screening, they served hotdogs, quinoa salad, apples, drinks and frozen yogurt for desserts. at first I thought they should use these money for the budget for school lunch... but my friend taught me it's because of marketing... ummm, I see.  This scale of marketing is American size I thought:) And I hope this marketing will be succeeded!! And I enjoyed them... so I'm trying share this movie with everyone!!
And thank you for Stefanie who brought me to screening. And she is now working for changing school lunch... I always enjoy to hear about her work and it make me think a lot about food:)

  1. I have heard they have same problem in the UK. One of the reasons is children's family environment. Well, it's not only UK but also other countries too. I have seen a young mother giving Fried Chicken to her child(I guess 3years old...),the child was eating very naturally....
