New Japanese Food....

Now I'm not in Japan so it's not easy to make Japanese food because I need to think some alternative ingredients that we don't have here or expensive here.
But this inconvenience makes me think new recipes:) It's good to find new taste and sometimes it's better than what I cooked in Japan:)

Today I made kind of "Yakisoba".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yakisoba
But I didn't have soft Yakisoba noodle so I used dried Chinese noodle (Which is not Ramen noodlehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramen). Also when I buy soy bean sprouts here, the package is too big for me. So once I buy it, I have to use them everyday!!
And usually I use onion, cabbage, carrots for Yakisoba but today I needed to use as many soy bean sprouts as I can so I didn't use them...
Here is the recipe.

Heat minced ginger with oil.
Add and stir sliced mushroom for a while and add soy bean sprouts.
Boil dried chinese noodle.
Add chopped pork and snow peas.
Seasoned with salt and pepper.
Add noodles.
At last add a TINY bit of Yakisoba sauce or Okonomiyaki sauce.

When I was stirring vegetables, it smelled sweet like when I was boiling corn.... and .... the taste was.... so good. Because soybean sprouts and snow peas were so sweet naturally. Then because of ginger? I was saving some of them for tomorrow lunch but when I finish dinner, I ate all of them... or not ginger but because of my American size stomach?

Simple is the best!!

American Size

Everyone knows there are American size in many things.... like American size drink, meal, clothes.... and so on.... But I was surprised about this size of gap between Japanese and American....

These left and middle tooth blushes are the smallest one that I could find here in US. And right one is from Japan. Most of them are much bigger. No, it's not big.. GIANT!!!
When I arrived here I was using kid's blush and it was for 5 years old kids.... because I couldn't use this big blush for my mouth. And when I went back to Japan, my dentist told me to bring Japanese blushes. So I brought tons of Japanese blushes!! lol I know Japanese people is smaller than American but
Is mouth size that different????
My stomach became American size but... my teeth size won't be changed!!!!

Who wanna learn Japanese??

I was talking with my American friend about English education in Japan the other day.
When someone ask Japanese people "How are you?" and probably most of us Japanese will answer "I'm fine thank you, and you?"
Don't you think so? Because we learn this conversation and "This is a pen." for the first step for English. lol
So when I came here, I was surprised everyone doesn't answer "I'm fine thank you"... lol
Most of them answer just "Good!! Thank you" and they say once again "How are YOU?" ...
Haha, learning language with text book is good but sometimes it can't explain real language...
Is this the same for studying Japanese in U.S.A?
But how about this text book? Who wanna try??

もし誰かが"How are you?" って聞いたとすると、おそらく多くの日本人が "I'm fine thank you, and you?"
最初に英語で習ったのは、これと"This is a pen."
I'm fine thank you" を聞かないのには驚きました。
Thank you"で終わらせてしまうか、そのあとに、"How are YOU?"

Summer sweets!!

Last weekend, I was around West 4th station... I had a pizza and I thought I saved money a little bit....BUT I found this shop next to pizza shop...... I couldn't pass through because it was so hot day!!
http://www.pop-bar.com/

When see this sight,,, who can stop buying this?? lol
They said we can get many kinds of topping like chocolates, nuts and so on but that day was too hot to choose nuts or chocolate so I just tried plain one:) Coconut!! It was sooooo good:)
And I forgot to take picture before I bit... lol

Pork Fat Edamame??

I went to SPITZER'S the other day.
http://www.spitzerscorner.com/
They had interesting menus... especially "Kobe Burger" and "Pork Fat Edamame".....
I've never seen this edamame in Japan. It was fried edamame... anyone?
The taste was OK but I prefer just quick boiled edamame.... yum:)
But the best plate in this restaurant was!!!! "Beef cheek with horseradish sauce sandwiches"!!
That was amazing:)

Trader Joe's

I like to go to "Trader Joe's" Because they have good stuff in good price!! I saw 2 shops will be open soon in Manhattan. They are getting bigger and bigger!!
And also I find many unique things every time:) And last time I went there, I found this!!
I'm not sure American likes this texture but maybe "Mochi Cream"(This is popular shop in Japan that selling many many kinds of Mochi Ice Cream http://www.mochicream.com/) can start business in U.S.A. soon:) lol
I've seen this at "Kenka" which is Japanese Izakaya (Izakaya is...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Izakaya) in NY. It's pretty funny place to go... You can enjoy funky Japanese atmosphere!! http://maps.google.com/maps/place?client=safari&rls=en&oe=UTF-8&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=Kenka+ny&fb=1&gl=us&hq=Kenka&hnear=ニューヨーク,+NY&cid=75412288690634467
If you go there, please be careful when you go to restroom because they have only Japanese signs for men and women.... so men is "男", women is "女". Why don't you remember this sign first then go there? :)

Central Park

Last night I went to Central Park to see Hiromi's concert.... but we couldn't get inside because we went not early enough.... BUT we had a great time in summer evening central park. There were many people, many music, a lot of fun stuff and many fireflies.... what a amazing night we had:)

When you come to Central Park, you can be back 5 years old kid and have fun with big bubbles!! ... you can enjoy jazzy night.... or you can spend romantic time in the light of fireflies.... :)

Hot day....

Today was 81 degree... so hot....
But I felt hotter yesterday because of humidity.
I didn't know NY is that much humid before I came here.
I was in Chicago before and I didn't feel humidity at that time so my image of America was dry.
I should've known that America was big.... haha.
But I think everybody who is living here knows how to enjoy summer!!
And I'm learning from them now:) But I have to be careful for sun burnt.... If I do everything the same as what they do in the sunshine, I will be get sun burnt too much....
In Japan, most of girls are using sun's cream and sun umbrella not to get sun burnt and to keep white beautiful skin!! And here..umbrella? ... no way!! Haha. This is the biggest difference of Japanese girls and American girls I think:)
I'm not sure which is better but I'm gonna enjoy summer and try not to get sun burnt too much... :)

Jazz Festival

Yesterday I went to Red Hook Jazz Festival.
When I heard about this I thought it must be big event. But when I went there, it was in small space and everyone was lying on grass and there were many kids running around.
And I really liked this.
Of course I like big event but this event was really comfortable and I could enjoy music and it was relaxing:)
I hope there are many event like this in Japan too...

Facebook

What do you think about Facebook?
Actually I'm using Facebook a lot. Many friends of mine knows that already though....:)
In Japan "Mixi" is much popular than Facebook I think. They have similar system to Facebook but there is difference of footstep. When you see someone's page, you will leave your footsteps in their pages. And also we can see more information of each person than Facebook... I believe that these days they have more security system... I'm not sure about Mixi yet....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixi
But here, in NY, I was so surprised that everyone is using Facebook and many people is checking with cell phone too!! When I saw many adults are checking facebook in subway, I thought "No way!!" That was 8 months ago but now... I'm doing the same thing... lol
Maybe in Japan many people is watching TV with cell phone and playing game with Nintendo DS in the train not only kids buy also adults.. These are similar things? Probably... :)
How to use those kinds of social networking is depend on the person but I hope I can use it wisely and not to rely on them.... And I hope everyone can use them for only for happy things!!

I can't say loudly but... I'm enjoying it a lot....lol

Facebook
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook

Red Velvet Cake

Do you know what I was surprised the most in America for pastry?
It's "Red Velvet Cake"!!
Why....
Because I've never seen such a red food in Japan... or any country? Have you?
And now I can find Red Velvet Cake every where and many kinds of shape and frosting.
Wow what a culture!! And now I know how to make it...
It was good surprise that it's a kind of chocolate cake.
Also I like that paring of Red Velvet and Cream cheese frosting.
Still I prefer just chocolate cake though....

How to make curry (Japanese style? no.... I You Me style)

How to make my curry... I don't have recipe because I use what I have in refrigerator...
But I will write what I used tonight....
In the big pot, put some oil you like and add some minced ginger.
Cook for a while until you smell ginger and add sliced onion.
When onion get soften add curry powder and flour. Cook for a while and stir not to get burnt.
Add diced tomato and water.
Frizzle some beef with another pan and season with salt and pepper.
Put beef with all oil into pot and add bunch of vegetables like carrots, potatoes, zucchinis and mushroom what you have from hard one to soft one. Add bay leaf if you want. Season with salt, pepper, sake, soy sauce. Cook until get creamy.
Oh, chef Sue B will punish me because she gave me recipe writing class.... lol

HATCHI

There is the movie called "HATCHI"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6U7mAnPtw4"
Did you see this movie? These days I see a lots of Japanese dogs in NY especially "Shiba" but this is the story of "Akita".
In Japan there's not "Statue of liberty" but we have "Statue of HATCHI". This story is that much famous in Japan.
If you have chance to see this, and please try to see Japanese one too. It's interesting to compare "Hatchi" and "Hatchiko". :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L5QQUsm7l8&NR=1

BBQ

After getting hot, I heard many "BBQ" and I didn't know there were that many kinds of BBQ and now I know. Because I went to BBQ event in Madison Square Park last Sunday. There were many BBQ shops around the park and they were all different. It was interesting to see how they cook meat and long lines.
BBQ is so American for me!!

baking and decorating...

I just started working in pastry shop recently but I already learned a lot. Baking, decorating and how much everyone can be happy with sweets!! I saw many happy smiles in the shop where I'm working. That's amazing moment to find their smiles.
And that makes me smile and happy feeling even in the kitchen is hot...
So this is the best thing!! Everyone can be happy:) That's what I was looking for.
I saw and met many people and things made me smile in my life. So I want to give them smile back!!
I hope I can:)

One of my favorite place in NY!!

There is small Arc de Triomphe... and on that day I found piano in the park!! Wow that's NY!!

10 months has past.

I came to NY last August. Already 10 months has past... Time flies...
First I only came here for cooking school and I had no idea how to stay here and get a job. But I wanted so much and I worked so hard to hunt a job and now I could... Life is interesting. Who knows what happens next to us?
I have no idea what's gonna be happen to me in one year... :) But that's why life is so interesting!!
What is your dream?
